CINCINNATI – The Main and Walnut street bridges over Fort Washington Way, as well as the south halves of those intersections on Third Street, will be closed at 9:00 a.m. this Monday, Oct. 6, through 4:00 p.m. Friday, Oct. 10, so crews can continue to prepare the area for the installation of track for the Cincinnati Streetcar.

“The contractor will be modifying the street grades at these intersections to provide a smooth ride for both cars and the streetcar,” said John Deatrick, project executive.

The reconstruction will be done in phases to reduce potential traffic congestion, starting with the south half of Main and Walnut next week. The north half of Walnut and Third will done Oct. 16-20. The north half of Main and Third will be done in mid November.

Third Street will be reduced to two lanes during the reconstruction.

Detour signs will be posted to alert motorists and pedestrians. Motorists traveling south on Walnut will be detoured along Third to Race to Second.  Northbound motorists will be detoured to Vine, or via the Second Street ramp to Pete Rose Way to Broadway.

The east sidewalk on Walnut and west sidewalk on Main over Fort Washington Way will remain open.

After reconstruction of the intersections is complete, crews will continue to prep this U-shaped stretch of the streetcar’s 3.8-mile route. Track is scheduled to be installed there beginning in mid to late November with plans to finish before the 2015 Reds Opening Day.

Other streetcar work
Meanwhile, crews continue to excavate, prep and install track on the north end of the streetcar route near Findlay Market. Track will be installed on Walnut Street between Sixth and Eighth streets through late October.

In addition next week, Main Street at Central Parkway will be reduced to two lanes Monday, Oct. 6, through Friday, Oct. 10, to allow crews to tie in valves on a water main as part of streetcar-related infrastructure improvements. All lanes on Central Parkway will be open.

This is the first of three tie-ins that will take place in October in the same area. Additional tie-ins are scheduled for Oct. 13-17 and Oct. 20-24.

Signs will be posted to let motorists know which lanes are closed. Arrow boards also will be posted to direct motorists around the site.
