CINCINNATI – Track construction for the Cincinnati Streetcar will resume in the Central Business District on Walnut Street beginning at 9:00 a.m. Monday, Jan. 12. Crews will cut out existing pavement and dig the trench for track between the intersection of Sixth and Walnut south on Walnut to just past the entrance/exit for the Fifth Third Center garage at Fountain Square.
“The work will take place during non-peak traffic hours next week to reduce the potential for congestion in this busy area of downtown that includes the Aronoff Center for the Arts, the Contemporary Art Center, restaurants and the 21 C Hotel,” said John Deatrick, streetcar project executive.
One lane of westbound traffic on Sixth Street through the Walnut Street intersection will be maintained 9:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. daily to accommodate construction crews. One lane of southbound traffic will be maintained on Walnut Street.
Metal plates will be placed over the work site at night. Access to area businesses and parking garages will be maintained at all times.
On-street parking on Sixth Street between Walnut and Main will be prohibited during work hours. Motorists will be allowed to park at meters in the area after 6:00 p.m. daily.
Cincinnati Police will be on site to maintain traffic flow while work is under way. An arrow board and construction cones will help direct motorists around the site as well.
Crews will lay track in the intersection next weekend. Another news release will be issued with details about that next phase of work.
