CINCINNATI – Fourth Street will be closed between Elm and Race beginning at 5:00 a.m. tomorrow, Saturday, Sept. 10, through 5:00 a.m. Monday, Sept. 12, as crews begin demolition of an 10-story parking garage. Crews this weekend will use a wrecking ball to remove the southwest corner of the garage nearest Elm Street and mid way along Fourth.
Motorists traveling on Fourth Street will be detoured south at Race Street, west on Third, north on Central Avenue, east on Fifth and north again on Elm.
Detour signs will be posted to help direct motorists and pedestrians. Local access to businesses and residences will be allowed.
Demolition will take approximately six months to complete because of the size and location of the garage. The site, which is connected by skywalks to Mabley Place and Saks Department Store, is being cleared to make room for construction of a mixed-use residential and commercial tower.
Crews plan to close Fourth Street, Race or Elm on various weekends over the next several months to do the parts of the demolition that require a wrecking ball. Updates will be sent in advance of future road closures.
During the week, crews will focus on interior demolition.
The curb lane and sidewalks around the site on Elm, Fourth and Race streets will remain closed until demolition is complete in February 2017.
