CINCINNATI – Central Avenue will be closed between Fifth and Sixth streets Saturday, April 2, so crews may deliver the first shipment of three historic Winold Reiss murals to the Duke Energy Convention Center from the Cincinnati/Northern Kentucky International Airport. The closure will begin at 6:00 a.m. and continue until crews are finished at approximately 8:00 p.m.
The closure is needed to accommodate two cranes that will unload and set the large, mosaic murals into place on the convention center’s west exterior wall, which faces Interstate 75. In addition, on-street parking will be prohibited in this stretch of Central Avenue.
Motorists heading north on Central Avenue will be detoured east on Fifth Street, north on Elm, west on Sixth and north again on Central. Motorists traveling south on Central Avenue will be detoured east at Seventh, south on Race, west on Fourth and south again on Central.
Please see the map below for detour information. Detour signage also will be posted on site.
Local access will be allowed.
The delivery is expected to take place 10:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. The same closure will be in effect Sunday, April 3, in case of inclement weather Saturday.
In order to ensure safety, a public viewing area will be set up on the west sidewalk along Central Avenue.
A total of nine murals will be shipped to the Duke Energy Convention Center from CVG. Additional deliveries are tentatively scheduled for later in the spring. This Saturday’s delivery will include three murals.
Each mural measures 20 feet wide by 20 feet tall and 8 inches thick. They were produced by Winold Reiss in 1933 to depict scenes from Cincinnati’s manufacturing past. They have been on display in two terminals slated for demotion at the Cincinnati/Northern Kentucky International Airport.
