CINCINNATI – Second Street will be closed between Walnut and Main beginning at 5:00 a.m. Monday, Oct. 12, until 4:00 p.m. Friday, Oct. 30, to accommodate crews installing special curved track for the Cincinnati Streetcar. Main Street also will be closed between Second and Third streets.
“This is the last major street closure needed as crews finalize construction of the streetcar track,” said John Deatrick, streetcar project executive. “The closure will be in place for three weeks because curved track on a bridge is more complicated than other track to install. This piece of track will connect the Main Street segment to Walnut via Second Street at the route’s southern-most point.”
On Walnut, southbound through traffic will be allowed but the northbound lanes will be closed between Second Street and Freedom Way. Local access to businesses and residences will be allowed. Also, Joe Nuxhall Way/Main Street will be reduced to one right-turn only lane at Second Street. The traffic signal at Second will flash yellow to allow for a continuous turn with caution.
Motorists traveling east on Second Street will be detoured south on Walnut, east on Freedom, north on Joe Nuxhall Way/Main, and east again on Second. Motorists will still be able to access the ramps to Columbia Parkway and I-71 north via the detour route.
See the linked map here for more information on the suggested detours.
Detour signage will be posted. Cincinnati police will manually control signals at key intersections to help maintain traffic flow during morning and evening rush hours and during special events at The Banks.
The crosswalks at all four corners of Second and Main will be closed. A temporary ADA-accessible crosswalk will be in place mid block across Second Street between Walnut and Main. Pedestrian detour signage will be posted. The linked map here also shows pedestrian detours.
Lane restrictions remain in place on Second at Main today and tomorrow as crews continue to prep the area for the track installation.
Other streetcar work
Meanwhile, crews will install overhead power wire along Main Street tonight, Thursday, Oct. 8, from 7:00 until 5:30 a.m. tomorrow, Friday, Oct. 9, between 12th and Second streets, and on Second to Walnut. Through traffic will be allowed with brief closures as the crew moves through each intersection. Police will assist with traffic.
