CINCINNATI – The north half of the intersection of Walnut and Third Street will be closed from 6:00 p.m. Friday, Oct. 17, through 5:00 a.m. Monday, Oct. 20, so crews can prepare the area for the installation of track for the Cincinnati Streetcar.

This work is part of the streetcar’s 3.6-mile route that crosses over the Walnut Street and Main Street bridges spanning Fort Washington Way between Third Street and Second Street.

“The engineering involved in prepping the area and setting track is especially complex over Fort Washington Way and Second Street,” said John Deatrick, project executive. “Because of the complexity, we will continue to work in the area until early spring. We will finish just before Opening Day for the Cincinnati Reds.”

This weekend, motorists on Walnut Street or Fourth Street will be detoured south onto Race Street to Third or Second. Detour signs will be posted. Police will be stationed at Fourth and Walnut to control signals and help with traffic flow.

Ongoing work in this area will require future lane restrictions and partial road closures south of Third Street on Walnut, Main and Second streets. Crews will continue to work in phases to maintain traffic flow and reduce congestion. Track will begin to be installed later this fall.

Other streetcar work includes:

Underground Electric on Main Between Sixth And Seventh

Farther north in the Central Business District this weekend, Duke Energy will be installing underground electric conduit on Main Street between Sixth and Seventh as part of streetcar-related infrastructure improvements. This block will be closed from 7:00 p.m. Friday, Oct. 17, until 5:00 a.m. Monday, Oct. 20.

Motorists on Main Street will be detoured west at Sixth Street, north at Vine and east on Seventh. Sixth Street will remain open to through traffic. Detour signs for motorists and pedestrians will be posted and local access maintained.

Water Main Tie-Ins at Main and Central Parkway
Meanwhile, crews continue to perform tie-ins on water main valves at Main Street and Central Parkway. Westbound Central Parkway remains closed between Sycamore and Main streets until 4:00 p.m., Friday, Oct. 24. Work on the first of three tie-ins started in early October and will finish this month.

Travelers heading west on Central Parkway are being detoured south on Sycamore to Ninth Street to Main and then back to Central Parkway. Eastbound Central Parkway remains open.

A law enforcement officer continues to be posted at Sycamore and Central Parkway during weekdays to manually control traffic signals.

Please note: Vehicular access to the Hamilton County Jobs and Family Services building will be prohibited from Central Parkway.

Detour signs will be posted to help guide pedestrians and motorists.

Track Installation on Walnut
Track installation will continue on Walnut Street, south of Seventh to Sixth.
